Drug Treatment and Interventions
Drug addiction and abuse affects individuals, families, schools, communities and workplaces with overwhelming and often tragic consequences. While the number of male versus female addicts is split almost exactly down the middle, most research, treatment options, and recovery programs are designed with a man's temperament and motivations in mind.
The Canyon addresses the concerns and addictions of individuals by forming drug treatment plans based on personal needs and goals rather than trying to force everyone into a generic one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Our separate male and female residential facilities are designed with gender-specific needs in mind, ensuring safety, privacy and a luxurious respite to soothe your spirit during the tumult that usually defines the new recovery.
The Need for Drug Treatment for Women: Statistics
In the past year alone:
- More than $58 billion and 20 percent of Medicaid's budget has been spent nationwide in the struggle with drug abuse
- 2 million women used cocaine
- 3.7 million women abused prescription drugs
- 6 million women used marijuana
- 25 percent of addictive prescriptions were written for elderly women
- More than 200,000 women die from drug addiction each year - that is four times as many victims than those claimed by breast cancer.
The one-year period between 1990 and 1991 saw an increase of 17 percent in AIDS cases among women. Today, around 70 percent of women with AIDS are involved in injection drug use or have had sex with injection drug users, ranking AIDS as the fourth leading cause of death among women.
Risk Factors for Women: The Need for Drug Treatment
Almost 70 percent of female drug users have disclosed that they experienced sexual abuse before the age of 16, and almost all of these women had at least one parent who used drugs or alcohol themselves. As adults, mental health problems like low self-esteem, depression and eating disorders; physical health problems like sexually transmitted diseases; isolation from supportive friends and family; as well as feelings of loneliness are all contributing risk factors that can lead to drug use and addiction.
Obstacles to Drug Treatment for Women
The enormity of the problem with drug addiction among women may very well be underestimated as women are less likely to admit or seek help for problems with drugs or alcohol. Social stigma surrounding the do-it-all "superwoman" places enormous pressures on women, and those who cannot live up to these wildly high standards usually suffer from feelings of shame or disgrace. Add to that the fear of losing one's children or going to jail for neglect or abuse, then factor in who will take over family responsibilities and domestic chores and it's no wonder few women are willing to go through the treatment they need to successfully recover from drug and alcohol addiction.
