There IS Federal Money for Outreach and Treatment

There IS Federal Money for Outreach and Treatment Homeless adults battling co-occurring disorders in the Northeast will have a better change of recovery, thanks to an influx of federal funding.

In today’s tight financial climate, there usually isn’t enough money to go around to all who have needs. There is help to be had, though, so don’t give up hope.

The Addictions Care Center of Albany, New York, recently received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to treat homeless men and women with combined problems of substance abuse and mental illness.

"This grant will literally allow us to fill some of those gaps in the treatment system," said Keith W. Stack, executive director of ACCA.

Where the Funds Will Help

The money will fund new staff, including a case manager, an addiction counselor with mental health training and a part-time psychiatric nurse practitioner or psychiatrist at ACCA. The goal is to identify mental health problems among homeless addicts quickly and get them the treatment they need in order to make the recovery effort easier.

The grant is one of the largest the agency has received for a treatment program, proving to others out there trying to help those battling addiction that there are funds to be had and their work is not in vain.
