From Dysfunction to Insight

Therapists use life skills to help othersNegatives become positives when kids from dysfunctional homes use their childhood coping skills to help others as adults.

If you've ever gone through the counseling process and wondered where that therapist gets his or her insight and listening skills, you may have their dysfunctional parents to thank.

We've all encountered negative experiences in life. In fact, the term dysfunction is so rampant nowadays that those who DON'T classify their family or upbringing that way are the ones outside the norm.

Some children of dysfunction are putting to good use those skills they were forced to develop at an early age. It turns out that children of addicts or with parents who suffer from psychological issues hone their counseling skills beginning when they're very young. While still children, they learn to look at a person and determine what they're trying to say or what their expression means and what they need to do in response. They become experts at reading others.

Informal studies have shows that most therapists came from families of neglect or had upbringings that were very precarious. It may seem incongruous with their future career path, given that we trust these people to help us find a path to a more normal, stable life, but their early situation forced them to develop skills that are specifically suited for this task.
