Medication's Role in Drug Treatment

Medication in drug treatmentWhat role should medication play in the world of substance abuse treatment and recovery?

It seems counter-intuitive, using drugs to help treat drug dependency, but it works in many cases and is a standard part of drug treatment in many respected treatment and recovery programs.

The problem is that there is a lot of confusion about the role of medications in chemical dependency treatment. Incorrect information and outdated beliefs have created barriers affecting the use of medications to treat chemical dependency, specifically in residential treatment centers where individuals are under constant medical supervision. Many mental health and chemical dependency conditions result from a chemical imbalance in the brain and central nervous system. The right medications can bring that chemistry back into balance.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

The Canyon's co-occurring disorders approach allows its staff to address not only the substance abuse problem but also any mental health issues that may be contributing to that addiction. Medication treatment in chemical dependency can promote recovery and reduce symptoms associated with both mental illnesses and addictions. There are very effective non-addictive medication options for both mental health and chemical dependency treatment.

But why use medication at all? Research shows that chemical dependency treatment can be far more effective if symptoms of withdrawal, cravings and mental health conditions are controlled. In fact, they are an important part of preventing relapse.

Not all substance abuse treatment includes medication, and each case should be carefully reviewed by an on-staff physician and monitored regularly. Used correctly, medication can be a useful tool in the recovery process.
