Rehab vs. Jail for Lindsay Lohan
A new sentence of jail followed by treatment for probation violations has reinvigorated the debate about using jail as a punishment for the disease of addiction.
The debate continues over the benefits of treatment vs. jail as troubled actress Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail this week for violating her probation following a 2007 drunk driving conviction. The Los Angeles County judge also ordered Lohan to follow her jail time with 90 days in a drug treatment program.
Lohan's Missed Sessions and Court Date
The behavior the judge took issue with was the nine weekly counseling sessions missed since December 2009. Lohan was initially ordered to attend the weekly sessions or face jail. The situation was made worse when Lohan missed a court appearance when she couldn't return from the Cannes Film Festival after reportedly losing her passport while in the French resort town. As a result, Lohan was fitted with an alcohol monitoring bracelet in May. The judge ruled this week that the bracelet will stay on until Lohan reports to jail later this month.
This, however, did not completely stop Lohan's drinking. Her SCRAM bracelet reportedly measured an alcohol level of 0.03 percent in the actress' body at midnight on June 7.
Lohan has been through several treatment programs in the past, but those close to her hope this time will be the final step to true recovery. Meanwhile, the experts will continue to argue the implications of locking up those who are suffering from the disease of addiction.
