ADD and Addiction

Attention Deficit Disorder was misunderstood for decades, and the experts are still continuing to learn more with each passing year. For children who grow up with ADD, it can be a defining part of their lives and affect the entire family. And the issue is often passed down through the gene pool since parents with ADD have a 30 percent chance that they'll have a child with ADD.

In addition to the behavioral and learning issues the disorder can cause, families with ADD have a higher incidence of physical and verbal abuse. Studies have shown that those with ADD also have a higher risk of turning to alcohol or drugs to self-medicate.

The stats paint a grim picture, but that doesn't need to be the reality for everyone with ADD.

Contributing Factors to ADD

In the same way we treat those with a drug or alcohol dependence by addressing all the underlying emotional and mental issues that may have contributed to their addiction, ADD needs to be looked at in context as well. You need to address the damage done by those contributing factors. For those with ADD, there are often self-esteem issues, particularly in those who weren't diagnosed as children. The disorder is often mistaken by teachers and other adults as a behavior problem resulting in the child being labeled lazy, naughty or even dumb. These labels are obviously very damaging and something the child carries with them into adulthood.

ADD Treatment

Stimulant medications like Dexedrine, Ritalin, Desoxyn, and Adderall work with the neurotransmitter dopamine and are commonly prescribed to treat ADD. But medication alone is not the answer. If it were, there wouldn't be so many people suffering from ADD and a related drug or alcohol addiction. If prescriptions alone were enough, those suffering from ADD wouldn't seek out other ways to self-medicate, turning to street drugs to soothe their restless minds and numb their feelings.

The Canyon is committed to a dual-diagnosis approach that treats not only the addiction but any underlying mental or emotional disorders, providing the best chance at lasting recovery. If you or a family member is struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol as well as ADD, call our toll-free number. Someone is there to take your call 24 hours a day and answer any questions you have about treatment, financing or insurance.
