Anorexia Treatment and Dual Diagnosis
Both drug addiction and anorexia are serious medical disorders. If you are struggling with just one, you require medical treatment; struggle with both simultaneously and it's even more important that you get the help you need as quickly as possible. Each disorder worsens the other, no matter which came first. After a time, there's no such thing as a primary disorder, meaning you can't isolate and treat one disorder before addressing the other with any long lasting success. Rather, if you are struggling with a dual diagnosis of drug addiction and anorexia, you need a dual diagnosis treatment that will address both issues at the same time.
The Canyon is a comprehensive, licensed dual diagnosis treatment center. We can help you get back to a healthy weight while teaching you positive, healthy habits including good eating habits, good self esteem and coping skills that do not include drugs and alcohol. The sooner you get help, the more effective your treatment will be.
Anorexia Treatment and Dual Diagnosis: Medication
In the treatment of anorexia, there is no medication. Depending on your drug of choice and your level of addiction when you start treatment, there likely is no medication for that as well. Rather, treatment of both issues starts with stabilizing the health and balance of your physical body and then looking at the mental, emotional and psychological issues that led you to these disorders. When you identify your triggers, you can learn to avoid them and learn healthy coping skills when urges and cravings appear.
Anorexia Treatment and Dual Diagnosis: Physical Health
The first order of business in any dual diagnosis treatment is to stabilize you physically. If you are physically dependent upon opiates or alcohol, you will need to under a drug detox. If you are dangerously underweight, you may need to be hospitalized for the first phase of your treatment. Inpatient or residential treatment is recommended in both cases in order to achieve the best result. Though your physical health will continue to be a struggle throughout your recovery, it starts with a stabilization period in treatment followed by a continued detox throughout the rest of your stay.
Anorexia Treatment and Dual Diagnosis: Mental Health
Mental health can be attended to during dual diagnosis treatment with more than just therapy. Though support groups sessions and one-on-one therapy is an important part of your weekly schedule, other ways to help your mental disposition include:
- Good, organic nutrition
- Learning stress management techniques
- Exercising gently and in moderation
- Writing or journaling
- Learning new hobbies
- Relaxation and meditative therapy
