Bipolar Disorder Treatment and Co-Occurring Disorders

Bipolar disorder, a mental illness in which you suffer from repeated bouts of emotional and psychological ups and downs, is a disorder that many people suffer from. Sometimes, bipolar disorder can occur in people who are addicted to drugs. If you suffer from drug addiction and the symptoms of bipolar disorder, you may be suffering from a co-occurring disorder, which can sometimes be very hard to diagnose, since the symptoms of drug addiction can often mimic those of bipolar disorder. For this reason, you should seek professional help if you are addicted to drugs and exhibit bipolar disorder symptoms, as you may need to receive dual diagnosis treatment in order to effectively treat your diseases.

At The Canyon, we have experience in treating the co-occurring disorders of bipolar disorder and drug addiction, and we can help you.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment and Co-Occurring Disorders: Medication

Bipolar disorders are often treated with medication, and if you are addicted to drugs and being treated for bipolar disorder with medication, it is important that your doctor know about your addiction. In some instances, the leftover drugs in your body can interact in negative ways with the medications used to treat bipolar disorder. Other times, bipolar disorder may be treated when it is really not present, because drug addiction symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of bipolar disorder. If you are being treated for bipolar disorder and you have an addiction to drugs, be sure to let your healthcare professional know about this, as you may need to have dual diagnosis treatment.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment and Co-Occurring Disorders: Therapy

Therapy is another important part of treating both bipolar disorder and drug addiction. Therapy gives you a chance to open up about your feelings, behaviors, and thoughts, and helps you learn how to deal with what's going on inside, as well as help you explore ways of dealing with the effects of medication, drug addiction withdrawal symptoms and the symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment and Co-Occurring Disorders: Mania

Mania, the "up" cycle of bipolar disorder, is often mimicked by drug addicts due to the effects that the drugs have on their bodies. Because the effects can be virtually identical, it is important to seek proper medical care, like the care provided by The Canyon, to ensure that a proper diagnosis is reached. You may be suffering from drug addiction, or a combination of drug addiction and bipolar disorder.

Typically, mania is treated with a combination of medications, electroconvulsive therapy or other treatment methods, due to the risk of unpredictable and reckless behavior during bouts of mania.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment and Co-Occurring Disorders: Depression

Depression, the "down" cycle of bipolar disorder, can be difficult to treat, because the use of drugs can cause unforeseen problems, or interact with any illegal drugs in your system. If you are a drug addiction and are experiencing depression, you should seek immediate help from a qualified treatment center like The Canyon. A qualified healthcare professional will be able to provide you with treatment options that will help bring the depression under control while also treating your drug addiction. Co-occurring disorders are often difficult to diagnose and treat, but with help from The Canyon, you can recover from your addiction and receive treatment for bipolar disorder, too.
