Dual Diagnosis Treatment and Drug Detox
If you are physically dependent upon a drug of addiction like alcohol, cocaine, heroin, prescription painkillers and others, then your first order of business upon arriving at drug rehab is to undergo a drug detox. This detox attends solely to your physical needs to ensure that you are healthy and safe as you break your dependence upon these toxic substances.
However, when you through another medical disorder into the mix, be it a physical issue like anorexia or bulimia or a psychological issue like anxiety or depression, it can complicate the detox process. If you or someone you love is trying to break free from drug addiction but also suffers from a co-occurring medical disorder, it is imperative that you do not attempt to treat yourself at home alone. Only a licensed dual diagnosis treatment facility like The Canyon is equipped to help you as efficiently and safely as possible.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment and Drug Detox: The First Phase
After your initial intake into any dual diagnosis treatment center, the first step is to stabilize you medically. If a hospital stay is necessary and they do not have the equipment to stabilize you on site, then off to the hospital you go. Most likely, however, unless there are serious medical issues, you will have a week or so in which you focus on resting and perhaps taking medications as you and your doctor see fit to counter the physical withdrawal symptoms you may feel while the toxins and drugs leave your system. Lots of water, lots of vitamins, small portions of healthy food, and lots of rest. Depending upon your drug of choice, you may undergo a medical maintenance treatment to take you off the drugs more slowly. It is up to you and your medical team.
Continued Drug Detox During Dual Diagnosis Treatment
After you've made it through the first and hardest part of drug detox, the focus on your physical wellbeing expands to include your emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing as well. However, we don't just forget about the physical changes and effects of long-term drug and alcohol use. Your physical detox continues in a less severe way through organic nutrition, gentle bodywork and massage, gentle exercise and meditation.
Drug Detox After Dual Diagnosis Treatment
By the end of your dual diagnosis treatment, you will have the tools you need to continue your healthy living after you return home. Healthy eating, nonabrasive exercise and other habits will help you to continue to flush the toxins out of your system and keep from adding more.
