Dual Diagnosis and Drug Rehab
When choosing a drug rehab facility it is important to note that often times other issues exist in conjunction with drug addiction. The Canyon understands this and treats depression and other issues caused by factors that range from chemical imbalances to trauma alongside the treatment of drug abuse. In order to help someone maintain a balanced and healthy life, The Canyon finds it crucial to address co-occurring disorders and treat them as a whole, rather than separately.
The Need for Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Drug Rehab
It is not uncommon to unearth other psychological issues such as depression when treating drug addiction. Because this is so often the case, it is pertinent to use a plan that utilize dual diagnosis treatment to have any chance for long lasting success.
Psychological disorders have many causes that include the following:
- Biology/Genetics. Researchers have discovered that chemical imbalances in the brain can cause depression in people from all walks of life. Antidepressants help redirect neurotransmitters so that balance is achieved within the brain and depression is thwarted. If depression is present in your family, then you are at greater risk for facing problems with it.
- Illness and Disease. If you have faced a life threatening illness like cancer or suffer from a chronic illness like diabetes or have had a heart attack, your chances of suffering from depression increase dramatically.
- Gender. If you are a female then you have twice the risk of suffering from depression at some point in your life as men. Hormonal issues are thought to be a key factor in the reason women are more likely to suffer from depression as men.
- Attitude. People who tend to be negative or pessimistic are more likely to suffer from depression. Simply "thinking positive" won't make the problem go away since most negativity is rooted deeply within the human psyche.
- Trauma and Loss. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one, a prolonged illness of someone close to you or have gone through a traumatic event or divorce you are a candidate for depression. These events can often be the catalyst to depression.
- Medication and Alcohol. Certain medications may carry the side effect of depression. Abuse of drugs and alcohol can also cause increased depression.
While depression can be caused by many factors it is crucial that you understand that it is not your fault. Whatever the underlying cause of your depression is, understanding that it is not a mark against your character is also important. Depression is a disease that, especially since many try to cover it with alcohol or drugs, should be treated by a dual diagnosis expert. The Canyon has these experts on hand to treat both the depression, or other psychological disorders and drug abuse simultaneously for a complete recovery.
