Dual Diagnosis Treatment and Chinese Traditional Medicine
For thousands of years, drug addiction and mental disorders have plagued the human race. Though we have yet to find a cure for either condition, Chinese medicine has proven to be an effective method of treating some of the symptoms of both. At The Canyon, we incorporate the principle of Chinese traditional medicine into each patient's treatment program along with 12 steps and a number of traditional and alternative therapies to make sure that every person who comes to us for help receives the most effective and efficient treatment possible.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment: The Basics
When you suffer from both addiction to drugs or alcohol and a psychological disorder like depression or bipolar disorder, it is essential that you receive treatment for both issues at the same time. Treating one first will likely lead to relapse before the second can be fully addressed. Addiction makes the psychological disorder worse and the psychological disorder usually fuels the craving for drugs and alcohol. In order to successfully overcome both and break the cycle, a dual diagnosis treatment that provides therapy for both issues concurrently is needed.
Chinese Traditional Medicine: The Basics
Two types of Chinese traditional medicine, namely acupuncture and the integrative approach to treatment, are found more and more often in drug rehabs across the country. Because acupuncture can be used to treat both addiction and depression among other psychological disorders, it is an especially good candidate for dual diagnosis treatment. Thin sterile needles that just barely break the first few layers of skin are applied at specific points along the body in an effort to open the energy flow in the body. It is believed that with regular treatment, this can help ease the grip of addiction and psychological disorders on the body when used in concert with other therapies.
Integrative approach, just as it sounds, is an ancient Chinese practice of adjusting all aspects of life in an effort to alleviate the sickness or disorder. Everything from specific foods in the diet, exercise, sleep habits, and spiritual concerns are inspected to root out some of the issues that may cause or exacerbate issues of addiction and psychological concerns.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment: Traditional Versus Alternative Methods
Using medications like anti-depressants and pharmaceuticals designed to simplify detox in concert with psychotherapy has been proven to work and are considered the traditional methods of treatment. However, no one treatment or approach works for everyone all the time. In an effort to make treatment more accessible, more holistic and more effective, the integration of alternative methods of treatment like Chinese traditional medicine into traditional programs only serves to make the program and the patient stronger.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment at The Canyon
At The Canyon, we incorporate both traditional methods and alternative therapies into each person's treatment program. Each week, during your one on one therapy session, you and your therapist will assess your program and determine what is working for you and what isn't and adjust your schedule accordingly. Our goal is to ease your transition from addiction to treatment and from treatment back home to a life of abstinence and provide you with everything you need to remain successful along the way. Contact The Canyon today at for more information about our dual diagnosis drug rehab programs.
If The Canyon isn't right for you, we'll find the place that is.
