Herbal Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Anxiety and Depression
In addition to or instead of traditional pharmaceutical medications for anxiety disorder and depression, herbal treatments are becoming more and more common in dual diagnosis treatment centers like The Canyon. At The Canyon, we treat drug and alcohol addiction as well psychological disorders like anxiety disorder and depression but we are unique in that we combine the two treatments so that you experience healing for both co-occurring disorders simultaneously.
Herbal Dual Diagnosis Treatment: St. John's Wort
St. John's Wort may well be the most popular herb for dual diagnosis treatment since it is well researched and well known for its effectiveness in treating depression. It is most beneficial for mild forms of depression, however, and may be useful during drug rehab and dual diagnosis treatment. However, for major depression or other psychological issues, St. John's Wort won't have much effect. Also, the possible interactions with other prescription drugs and/ or anti-depressants should also be taken into consideration as the list is long. There are also a number of side effects to look out for including upset stomach, dizziness and headaches. Even though it is an herb, it still has a potent effect on the body and can have negative physiological effects if taken without the supervision of a medical professional.
Herbal Dual Diagnosis Treatment: SAM-e
SAM-e, or S-adenosylmethionine, is slightly lesser known than St. John's Wort and is not an herb but a molecule that occurs in plant and animal cells. The idea is that, because we naturally produce less and less of this 'happy' molecule as we age that a supplement that replenishes it can treat depression. The studies show different results but the majority say that SAM-e has great potential with the possibility of treating even major depression. It affects serotonin and norepinephrine and, especially for those with drug addiction issues as well as depression, it could be a beneficial treatment since these neurotransmitters are affected by drug use and abuse.
Herbal Dual Diagnosis Treatment: Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids show up in the organic, nutritional meals served at dual diagnosis treatment centers not only for their good fats and heart healthy effects but for their possibilities in the treatment of depression as well. This oil that shows up naturally in coldwater fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines as well as other sources like walnuts and flaxseed, is common among diets in different parts of the world and these cultures show significantly less depression. In general, it can also reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, manic depression and stroke. In fact, there is no known risk to adding Omega-3 to your diet and can be used in conjunction with other medications. For those struggling with drug addiction as well as depression, it can be especially beneficial to increase your intake of Omega -3.
