Treating the Whole Person
Not all treatment programs are screening for mental health issues, despite studies that show they can hinder recovery and contribute to addiction.
All treatment programs are not created equal. Seeking treatment for drug or alcohol addiction is important and can even be life-saving, but choosing the right program is key.
The N-SSATS Report, conducted by the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, was just released and shows that in 2009 only 62 percent of all substance abuse treatment facilities provided brief mental health screenings that could be used to identify clients in need of trauma services. Less than half (42 percent) provided full diagnostic mental health assessments. This is despite the proof that this “dual diagnosis” approach to addiction is more successful long term.
Dual Diagnosis
Research shows that the experience of traumatic events and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often co-occur with a substance abuse disorder and are present among many substance abuse treatment clients, the new study reported. This trauma can include anything from being exposed to a natural disaster or violence in combat or noncombat situations to experiencing physical assault or domestic violence.
“Because of the relationship between substance use and trauma-related mental health problems, it is recommended that substance abuse treatment facilities offer mental health screenings and assessments to determine whether or not a client is suffering from a trauma-related illness and/or has been involved in domestic violence,” the study recommended.
The Canyon treats addiction with co-occurring disorders and believes that long-term recovery comes by treating not just the substance abuse but also any underlying issues or conditions. Only then is someone truly free.
