Women, Drug Addiction and Co-Occurring Disorders

The term 'co-occurring disorders' refers to the existence of two medical and/or psychological disorder simultaneously. This is a condition that often affects those who are struggling with drug addiction. Women, especially, tend to have other issues to deal with in addition to drug addiction, issues like eating disorders or mental/ psychological disorders like depression. Drug abuse and use may have actually started as a way to deal with these primary conditions or they may have come about as drug addiction developed. Either way, when more than just drug addiction is a problem, it's imperative that you find a dual diagnosis drug rehab, or a drug rehab that can treat both disorders simultaneously

The Canyon specializes in treating women who struggle with the co-occurring disorders of drug addiction as well as another mental or psychological issue. We treat both disorders simultaneously in our holistic dual diagnosis treatment program in California.

Women, Drug Addiction and Co-Occurring Disorders: Eating Disorders

Eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia are common among women. In fact, a large number of women addicted to prescription stimulants or to crystal meth or cocaine come to addiction as they struggle to maintain their weight. These drugs are known to boost the metabolize and decrease appetite, which can mean dramatic weight loss in a very short period. Unfortunately, this weight loss is not healthy and rarely stays if the addiction is not maintained. It's important that those who get treatment for eating disorders and drug addiction learn healthy ways to maintain their weight without using drugs.

Women, Drug Addiction and Co-Occurring Disorders: Depression

Another very common disorder among women who struggle with drug addiction is depression. Many women turn to alcohol or prescription painkillers like Vicodin or Percocet to numb their depression. Unfortunately, when these drugs wear off, a common effect of withdrawal or the "crash" is a depression. For those who come to depression naturally, these drug induced depressions can be overwhelmingly intense, so much so that many contemplate suicide or neglect their health to a dangerous degree during detox and withdrawal. It is important that these women undergo a medical detox to make sure that they have the support they need to avoid the drug cravings and remain strong until they pass to the therapeutic phase of dual diagnosis treatment.

Women, Drug Addiction and Co-Occurring Disorders: Get the Help You Need

Treating women who struggle with eating disorders and depression solely for their drug addiction issues is entirely ineffective. The co-occurring disorder is so often self medicated with drugs and alcohol and without treatment for both at the same time, it is not likely that these chronic disorders will stay in remission for long.
