Heroin Addiction Affects the Family

Heroin addiction is a devastating disease, not only for the person who has suffers from it, but also for his or her family. When one person in a family develops an addiction to heroin, the rest of the family instinctively tries to reach out and help. However, most addicts refuse help, and instead isolate themselves and turn their backs on their families and everything else they care about. Heroin addiction can be very embarrassing and shameful for everyone in the family. Even the user may be ashamed of his or herself, which only serves to complicate matters more. Although it may be a private matter for some, the effects of addiction are difficult to hide, so families may begin to curtail social and public activities to keep the addiction a secret. They may stop inviting people over for dinner, choose to stop going out and gradually become more and more isolated.
