Heroin Today
Heroin trafficking is a problem that has existed for many years, both in countries that grow opium poppies (the plant heroin is derived from) and the countries that heroin is shipped to. People have suffered from heroin addiction since the 1900s, when it was first developed and began to become popular in the United States and other industrialized nations. If we can develop an overall view of how heroin trafficking is in operation today, we can know more about how to curb its spread and stop more people from coming under its influence. Heroin doesn't just affect the person who takes it. It also affects their family, friends, coworkers, social circle and, ultimately, the whole of society.
At The Canyon, we can help you overcome your heroin addiction by providing you with services and treatments that have been developed by expertly trained and certified physicians and therapists.
Heroin Trafficking Today
Heroin is a drug that is shipped all over the world, most of it coming from the biggest producer of heroin, Afghanistan. In 2004, a survey produced by the United Nations estimated that Afghanistan accounts for nearly 87 percent of all of the heroin production in the entire world. Ever since the wars began in the country, poppy plant production has increased, and peaked in 2006.
Heroin Trafficking Today: Where the Drug Originates
Opium poppies, the plant from which heroin is created, are grown largely in Asia and Afghanistan. In Southeast Asia, there is an area known as the Golden Triangle, encompassing Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. Here, there is a large quantity of poppy plants that are grown for the purposes of creating heroin. In the United States, most of the heroin that is sold and consumed comes from Mexico and Columbia, though nations such as Pakistan were - up until recently - large producers and exporters. Recent conflicts and escalations of police activity in the country have cut down on the amount of poppy plants that are grown, and somewhat curbed the heroin trade in the area. Afghanistan, conversely, has increased its trade as Pakistan has declined, though this may have to do more with changing market forces than with police activity.
Penalties for Heroin Trafficking
Because heroin is illegal in most of the world, there are heavy penalties for its sale, trade and possession. In southeast Asia, for example, trafficking heroin results in an automatic death penalty, and this same harshness is present in other countries, such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. This penalty does not only apply to natives, but foreigners as well, and there have been well-publicized cases of foreigners who have been caught and sentenced to death because they were accused of trafficking heroin.
