The History of Heroin

Heroin is an extremely addictive opioid that is made from poppy plants, the same types of plants that opium are made from. Heroin is usually either intravenously injected or snorted through the nose. After this happens, the body catalyzes the drug and turns it into morphine. It then enters the brain, and causes an action similar to that of the naturally occurring chemical endorphin, which causes feelings of euphoria and pleasure. Because of its pleasurable side effects, heroin is often used as a recreational drug, as well as a painkiller to help patients suffering from severe pain caused by accidents or diseases. However, if used on a regular basis, an addiction to heroin can easily form, leading to unpleasant side-effects and heroin withdrawal symptoms if administration stops.

At The Canyon, we can help you if you're suffering from heroin addiction or abuse. We know what types of treatments and therapies work the best, and we'll work with you to develop a custom and holistic plan of action that will help you recover from your addiction and get back to your normal life.

Heroin History: The Discovery

Poppy plants have been grown as far back as 3400 B.C., but it was only in the 19th century that use became widespread across the world at large. Heroin, originally created in 1874 by a chemist named C.R. Alder Wright, was formed by creating a concentrated form of morphine, a drug already in use as a painkiller. After its initial conception, the drug received no notoriety until 23 years later, when a different chemist named Hoffman, who was working for the Bayer company, synthesized the compound in an attempt to create a morphine substitute that wouldn't have the same addictive properties. However, what he got instead was a product that was later called morphine, a drug whose potency is roughly two times greater than that of standard morphine, and whose addictiveness is just as powerful, as well.

Heroin History: A Popular Medication

Even though heroin was addictive, it was originally marketed as a non-addictive substitute for morphine, as well as a cough suppressant used on children. This continued until it was found that, after heroin enters the body, it is actually converted back into morphine.

Heroin History: Legality and Control

Although originally free for sale and purchase, heroin quickly came under the control of the US Government, through the 1914 Narcotics Act. This act strictly regulated the buying and selling of heroin, and restricted all sales to those of a medical nature. However, this initial bill had enough leeway that recreational users will still able to purchase it. Before long, though, more laws were passed, further controlling and restricting the sale and use of the drug, and today, it is strictly illegal to buy, sell, process or use heroin in the USA.
