The Social Effects of Heroin Addiction
Heroin use has become rampant in the country. In a 1996 study, around 2.4 million people reported using heroin at some time in their lives, with 216,000 of them reporting that the used it within the month preceding the study. Not only has its use grown in all age groups, but it has also spanned racial and gender lines, and has become the primary abuse drug (seen in drug treatment centers) in places like Newark, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Social Effects of Heroin Addiction Historically
Heroin is extremely popular in today's society, but it didn't just appear from nowhere. The roots of heroin in America stretches back to the 1800's, when opium dens stretched across the west. Opium (from which heroin is derived) was extremely popular with cowhands, and at times rivaled alcoholism for the number of people addicted physically and mentally to a substance. Over the turn of the century and into the early 1900s, drug companies began to package vials of heroin and morphine and sell them with hypodermic needles, selling them to customers who would use them to treat a variety of ailments. In that day and age, heroin was as popular as drugs like aspirin is today. Heroin and related drugs were sold legally in American until 1920, when new drug laws were passed. Over the rest of the century, more laws were created that made it harder and harder for people to obtain heroin. Thus, an illegal market was created, and people started trading in heroin on a "black market" of sorts. This illegal buying and selling of heroin has continued up and through today.
Heroin Addiction and Crime
Heroin is associated with crime for the simple reason that its manufacturing, use and distribution is illegal. Additionally, many people turn to a life of crime in order to help fuel their addiction for the illegal opiate. From around 1980 through 1990, arrests for heroin related crimes were steady, and then (as the drug's popularity rose) they began to rise. Everyone from petty street dealers to the mafia have been involved with heroin distribution, due to its lucrative nature. Imports from other countries helped fuel the flow of drugs into the country, and the government's response has been to tighten laws and step up enforcement of manufacturers, distributors and users of the drug.
