Heroin Addiction Treatment

Heroin addiction is a debilitating disease, but for those who are addicted, there is hope. There are many different treatment methods available for treating heroin addiction, and treatment is nearly always more effective if the addiction is caught early, rather than letting it go for long periods of time. The first step in any heroin addiction treatment is detoxification, and most detox programs also include ancillary treatments that help control withdrawal symptoms. If effective heroin detox treatments are used in combination with other treatments, such as behavioral treatments, then the entire treatment regimen is much more effective.

At The Canyon, we provide detox, behavioral and other treatments and therapies to people suffering from the disease of heroin addiction. Whether you have only been using heroin for a short period of time, or you're a life-long user, we can help you break your addiction and get back to a normal, healthy life.

Heroin Addiction Treatment: Detoxification

In detoxification, the first step in any successful treatment program, the addict's body is cleansed of the toxins and chemicals that have accrued during their stint as a drug abuser. During this period of time, the body will be going through severe withdrawal symptoms, so it's important to choose a detox program that has other treatments in place to help keep these symptoms under control. When combined with a program such as a residential treatment program, detox can be most successful, because it allows the person to first rid their body of the drug, and then learn how they can stay off of the drug for good.

Heroin Addiction Treatment: Methadone

Methadone, a synthetic opioid, is a drug used to help patients who are going through heroin addiction treatment. It helps to prevent the body from suffering from many of the withdrawal symptoms that occur when heroin is no longer administered, and it is safe, easy to administer and only has to be taken once per day. It is usually used in conjunction with other treatment programs to help individuals achieve a long-lasting recovery.

Heroin Addiction Treatment: Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine, a new chemical compound, has shown remarkable promise in helping people who are undergoing heroin and opiate addiction treatment. It acts like opiates do, by attaching itself to receptors in the brain, but does not create the same side effects that opiates do. It also has the advantage of being formulated so that it can be prescribed and administered in a doctor's office.

Heroin Addiction Treatment: Behavioral Therapies

Many types of treatment are great on their own, but it has been proven over the years that the best type of treatment is one that uses a combination of medicinal and behavioral therapies and treatments. Each type of treatment addresses a different part of the patient's needs, and by combining them together, a more holistic program can be formed that more adequately meets the needs of people who are addicted to heroin or other opiates.
