Heroin Rehab Medications

Many different medicines have been created specifically to aid in the treatment of heroin addiction. Two major types, methadone and buprenorphine, have shown fantastic results for people who have used them. Methadone, which is a synthetic opioid, helps to block heroin from being taken up by the body, as well as helping to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine, on the other hand, mimics the action of opioids, but doesn't have any side effects. While the effectiveness of these and similar drugs vary depending on the person, there is no doubt that medications such as methadone and buprenorphine help patients suffering from heroin addiction.

At The Canyon, we provide help for patients who are suffering from heroin addiction. We use a combination of medicinal and behavioral therapies to address all aspects of addiction and to help patients achieve a long-lasting abstinence from the drug.

Heroin Rehab Medications: Methadone

Methadone, a drug that has been used for more than 30 years, is a very reliable, safe and effective method of treatment. When used and prescribed properly, methadone has very little side effects, and its benefits are extremely effective in treating heroin addiction. Taken orally, it can help reduce and even eliminate heroin withdrawal symptoms for up to a day and a half, and doesn't block patients from feeling emotions, such as pain or pleasure. Finally, the key thing that methadone does is help to control cravings for heroin, and people who are on methadone are much less likely to go back to heroin because of the cravings.

Heroin Rehab Medications: Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine, a drug developed fairly recently, works differently than methadone, and it can be prescribed by a doctor in his or her own office. It works by mimicking the effects of opioids like heroin or morphine and attaching itself to receptors in the brain. However, unlike opioids, it does not cause any side effects, like euphoria or extreme pleasure. It also has the advantage of helping to suppress withdrawal symptoms in patients.

Heroin Rehab Medications: Other Medications

There are many other drugs available for treating heroin addiction other than just methadone and buprenorphine. Some of these include drugs like lofexidine, clonidine, and naltrexone. These types of drugs can help to reduce withdrawal symptoms and treat heroin addiction, but they also have side effects that may impair vision or other senses, making it difficult for patients to go about their daily lives.
