Marijuana, cultivated from the cannabis plant, is one of the oldest psychoactive plants known. Cannabis has also become one of the most widespread and diversified plants on the earth. It grows as weeds and as cultivated plants all over the world in a wide range of climates. The preparations of cannabis have been used as a remedy for centuries and the active ingredients can be put to use in a variety of medical situations.

The Dangers of Marijuana Addiction

Marijuana, while having desirable positive effects, also has negative effects such as impaired alertness, difficulty concentrating, poor coordination and bad reaction times. These effects can last up to 24 hours after smoking marijuana, so operations like driving can be impaired for a day or two. Research has shown that a significant number (15 percent) of accident victims have had marijuana in their blood, and another 17 percent had both marijuana and alcohol in their blood. The correlation here is clear.

  • Decrease in testosterone levels in men
  • Increase in testosterone levels in women

Social Effects of Marijuana Addiction

A study of college students revealed that skills relating to memory, attention and learning are all impaired in people who heavily smoke marijuana, even if it has been 24 hours since they last smoked. There were also difficulties concentration, sustaining attention, shifting attention to changes in their environments and processing new information. This is likely due to brain alterations caused by the use of marijuana.
