Marijuana Addiction Overview
Marijuana addiction-like cocaine addiction, alcohol addiction, heroin addiction and addiction to all drugs of dependence-usually begins with innocent experimentation. With continued use, more and more of the drug is required to create the euphoric high that many experience the first few times they use it. As a result, a physical tolerance develops. As use continues, psychological and emotional dependence upon the drug begins as well, and the two together-psychological and physical dependence-define marijuana addiction.
The Canyon is a licensed marijuana rehab facility in Peace Park, California, just outside of Malibu. Our all-inclusive drug addiction treatment attends to both the physical and psychological aspects of marijuana addiction.
Marijuana Addiction Causes
Though medical professionals and researchers around the world for centuries have been studying the problem, as yet, no one has been able to definitively determine the cause of addiction. There are, however, certain factors that are known to contribute to or hasten the development of addiction. For example, those who have a genetic predisposition for addictive behavior will be more likely to develop marijuana addiction after a relatively short period of marijuana abuse. Also, those who struggle with a psychological disorder like depression or anxiety are more prone to seek out drugs of addiction to self-medicate and, consequently, more often and more easily develop an addiction.
Marijuana Addiction Symptoms
A feeling that something isn't "quite right" is usually the tip off when someone you care about is struggling with marijuana addiction. Changes are often subtle at first but increasingly grow more noticeable as their addiction to marijuana grows more overwhelming. You may notice that your loved one has lost interest in old hobbies and old friends, adopting instead a new set of friends and hobbies that revolve around their new lifestyle. They may begin to fall behind at work or at school and their appearance may seem more slovenly than before. When addiction has fully taken over, you may notice that they are lying about their whereabouts, always claiming to be tired when you suspect they are high, and that money is disappearing as well as household items.
In general, a downward trajectory on all fronts begins with marijuana abuse turns into marijuana addiction.
