Signs of Marijuana Addiction

There are many signs of marijuana addiction due to the physical and physiological changes that people undergo when they use marijuana. Smoking marijuana can relax a person and elevate his or her mood, which can be followed by drowsiness and sedation. Other signs include heightened sensory perception, euphoria, feeling hungry (known as "the munchies") and altered perceptions of reality. Higher concentrations of THC may produce more hallucinogenic responses.

The Canyon provides a marijuana rehab program and treatments to help you break through your addictions and reclaim a healthy and normal life. Through a variety of traditional and nontraditional therapeutic options, The Canyon's expert staff and physicians help patients overcome marijuana addictions and give you the tools you need to stay clean.

Signs of Marijuana Addiction: What to Look For

There are a variety of things to look for to spot someone who is addicted to marijuana. Here are some things to take note of:

  • The drug itself. Marijuana is a mixture of gray and green dried shredded leaves, stems, seeds and flowers from the Cannabis Sativa plant, also known as hemp.
  • The smell. Marijuana gives off a clean, sharp, pungent smell, with some varieties having a citrus-like smell similar to that of a lemon tree, and others can even smell spicy or have an ammonia like smell.
  • Accessories. Marijuana is usually smoked using cigarette rolling papers or through use of a bong. Hash is sometimes smoked or eaten and can be included in baked goods as well. You can also look for marijuana seeds as well as pipes or homemade smoking devices.
  • The language. If your loved one uses words like 'ganja,' 'weed,' 'blunts,' 'Mary Jane' and other nicknames and slang terms, they are referring to or talking about marijuana or getting high.
