Social Effects of Marijuana Addiction

Marijuana addiction causes numerous side effects in users who are taking it on either a casual or regular basis. Some of these symptoms include things like sleep problems, memory problems, coordination problems, difficulty with comprehending speech or understanding situations or events, hallucinations, paranoid thoughts or feelings, panic attacks an problems with motor function and coordination. While some of these problems may not seem serious, all of them can cause long-term problems, and all of them make social situations difficult.

At The Canyon, we can provide you with the tools and resources you need to break your marijuana addiction so that you can have a rich, vibrant social life without the damaging effects of marijuana addiction.

Social Effects of Marijuana Addiction: Learning

Marijuana use, according to a recent study covering US college students, can severely impair learning, critical thinking and other related functions for as long as 24 hours after the last dose was taken. A study was conducted that closely observed student before, during and after they took marijuana, and found that - after taking marijuana - students were much more likely to suffer from memory problems, difficulty concentrating and a decline in comprehension and cognitive skills. This effect is likely much more pronounced in heavy or regular users due to changes that are made to the brain when the drug is taken for long periods of time.

Social Effects of Marijuana Addiction: Motivation

One of the major effects associated with marijuana is a lack of motivation. Marijuana can cause users to get easily distracted, and although they may make plans or intend to do things, they can forget about them easily, or simply not be motivated enough to do them. Physically, nothing is wrong, but mentally, there is a complete lack of motivation and users feel like even getting up is overwhelming. Many times, long-term addicts can experience what's known as a motivational syndrome, where they lose motivation about all aspects of their life, such as school, work, family and their responsibilities.

Social Effects of Marijuana Addiction: Social Behavior

Socially, having a lack of motivation can cause problems. At work, having no motivation can cause a deterioration in performance, leading to discipline or possibly termination. In school, lack of motivation can cause problems with both learning and in performing well in general. Friendships can also be threatened, since a lack of motivation to see anyone other than the people you smoke marijuana with can cause you to lose friends. And, as a marijuana addict, people often have negative connotations associated with you, leading to lost opportunities.
