Marijuana Being Used for Medicinal Purposes
Whether used for recreational or medicinal purposes, marijuana still has the potential to become emotionally and psychologically addictive. While medical use is becoming more accepted in some parts of the country, the jury is still out on whether inhaled marijuana can be considered "safe" even under medical supervision.
The Canyon recognizes the impact of marijuana dependency as well as the toll addiction takes on yourself and your family. Relief from physical or emotional disease is not a cure when the cost involves addiction. Treatment programs at The Canyon aim for abstinence as the most genuine approach to lasting recovery.
Medical Marijuana: Marinol Versus Smoked Marijuana
Synthetic THC, prescribed as Marinol, has been approved by the FDA as an alternative for treating nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy as well as appetite and weight loss for individuals with AIDS.
While THC is the active compound in marijuana, synthetic derivatives do not contain any of the 400 additional chemicals and toxins found in inhaled marijuana.
The FDA and Medical Marijuana
The Food and Drug Administration controls approval of all new drugs manufactured for medical use. Highly supervised clinical trials and detailed scientific data are required before determination can be made in regards to safety and effectiveness of a drug.
Inhaled marijuana differs in potency from one plant to the next, and from one inhalation to the next, therefore it's impossible to scientifically measure the amount of the drug being consumed. Even cloned plants grown under the exact same conditions can vary from harvest to harvest depending on time of year, intensity of lighting, temperature, or nutrient uptake.
Medical Marijuana and the Law
The Controlled Substances Act makes marijuana illegal with or without a prescription. In fact, medical professionals who write prescriptions for medical marijuana use are in violation of federal law. Penalties for growing, buying, selling, and possessing marijuana can be just as severe for other drugs in the same federal classification, including heroin, MDMA (Ecstasy), and LSD. Although the law does allow charges for first time offenders in possession of personal use amounts to be downgraded to civil penalties, fines can easily reach $10,000 not including court costs or lawyer fees.
State Law and Medical Marijuana
Voters continue to challenge the federal government's classification by approving state legislation of legal marijuana use under the direction of a physician. This circumvention of FDA testing and approval as well as blatant disregard for the CSA means the Drug Enforcement Agency must continue making arrests of otherwise non-violent criminals. Until marijuana is reclassified under the CSA, using marijuana for medicinal purposes is still a crime.
Medical Marijuana: The Research
More research is needed involving the psychotropic effects of marijuana and potential health benefits before it can be considered for legal medical use. Although it generally recognized that smoking marijuana is not the safest method of delivery, synthetic cannabinoids may hold the spotlight for future advances in medication.
