Women and Marijuana Abuse
Women comprise nearly 32 percent of admissions to drug treatment centers nationwide. Illnesses associated with drug use are expected to kill some 200,000 women annually - four times more than breast cancer. Research points to weakened immunity from exposure to marijuana smoke which increases the likelihood of developing respiratory infections, bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, and cancer (in the lungs, throat, gums, and neck).
More than 70 percent of female drug users have admitted to being physically and/or sexually abused before the age of 16. Having at least one parent in the house that also abused drugs or alcohol is another common thread among many women who use drugs as adults. Isolation from friends or family, manipulation or domination by a loved one, unmet emotional needs, and feeling powerless or worthless are contributing factors in a woman's battle with drug abuse.
The Canyon recognizes the unique psychological and physiological needs of women and seeks to offer balanced treatment options appropriate for every individual. Through a variety of traditional and non-traditional therapies and experiences, you will have the opportunity to reclaim your personal dreams and goals awakening your authentic relationship with life.
Marijuana Abuse and Its Effect on Fertility in Women
Continued use of marijuana can impair hormones in the brain that control puberty, menstrual cycles and ovulation. Trying to conceive is difficult when everything is not working as it should. Additionally, new studies have found that THC from marijuana is stored not only in fatty tissues, but also in organs and bodily fluids. So even if your partner doesn't smoke, sperm comes in contact with THC on its way to the fallopian tubes and loses its ability to link up with or even find the egg to be fertilized.
Marijuana Abuse and Pregnancy
Every day you smoke marijuana while pregnant puts your body in danger of high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, low weight gain, preterm labor and early delivery. Struggles with depression and low self esteem are intensified as well.
Your baby is also at risk for birth defects and developmental impairments, including:
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Impaired motor function
- Sudden death
- Learning disabilities
- Neurological disorders
Difficulty with attention, memory, and disorderly behavior become evident during preschool and elementary grades. Research indicates that further problems may arise in adolescence as the brain continues to develop. There are no cures for neurological damage caused by drug use in the womb; they are lifetime afflictions that can only be prevented by choosing to stay clean and sober while you are pregnant.
Marijuana Abuse and Breastfeeding
Recent tests have confirmed the presence of THC in urine samples from breastfed babies whose mothers use marijuana. Combined with secondhand smoke from marijuana cigarettes, infants are at increased risk of becoming too lethargic to be able to nurse which reduces the amount of milk produced for future nursing sessions. Also, toxins take much longer to filter out of an infant's body - anywhere from five to 12 hours depending upon age and weight. So even after the drug wears off, your baby is still experiencing its effects.
