OxyContin Addiction Symptoms

OxyContin is a very powerful opiate painkiller prescribed by doctors to treat moderate to severe pain. As effective as the drug is, it's also highly addictive and, unfortunately, few will be able to take it on a regular basis for very long before they find themselves physically addicted to the drug. For many, a mental addiction or craving for the euphoric high that accompanies the pain relief soon follows and these two together-the physical and mental dependences-add up to one thing: OxyContin addiction.

So what are the symptoms of OxyContin addiction? How do you know when you need an opiate rehab like The Canyon to help you break your OxyContin addiction?

OxyContin Addiction Symptoms

OxyContin addiction symptoms are both physical and psychological in nature. Though it may be difficult to be objective enough to identify them within yourself, if you step back and view your behavior and are honest about your thoughts and feelings about the drug, you may find that your OxyContin prescription has turned into an opiate addiction.

The physical symptoms of addiction can be seen most obviously when you stop taking OxyContin, oddly enough. Different from the way the drug affects you when you take it according to prescription, the physical symptoms you feel when you miss a dose or try to stop taking the drug are better indications of your state of addiction. These symptoms are more accurately described as OxyContin withdrawal symptoms and include things like nausea and vomiting, headaches, bone and muscle pain, agitation and insomnia.

OxyContin Addiction Dangers

OxyContin addiction symptoms begin slowly and increase in intensity over a period of weeks and can be fatal in some cases; seizures, convulsions, coma and even death can occur when there are co-occurring medical conditions, whether or not you are aware of them.

Another common concern is that of overdose. Your body is constantly adjusting and the level of OxyContin in your system is one that your body responds to. Take it away and your body compensates. Attempt to return to taking OxyContin after a period of disuse and you'll find that your body no longer has the tolerance it once did. The problem is that too many take as much OxyContin as they were taking when they quit, and without the protective tolerance, overdose is the result.

Treatment for OxyContin Addiction Symptoms

The risks of OxyContin addiction are too great to ignore-lost family, damage to your physical and emotional safety as well as that of others, destroyed finances, lost career and goals. The only way to mitigate the symptoms of OxyContin addiction and remove the dangers inherent to the problem is to treat it medically with an OxyContin detox followed by OxyContin addiction treatment.
