OxyContin Addiction Withdrawal

OxyContin addiction withdrawal can catch you off guard the first time you experience it. Characterized by intense physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms, an OxyContin detox and withdrawal is unpleasant at best and deadly at worst. The best way to treat OxyContin addiction withdrawal is with a medical OxyContin detox followed immediately by OxyContin addiction treatment.

The Canyon is a full-service OxyContin rehab located just outside of Los Angeles, California, licensed to offer a medical OxyContin detox and addiction treatment.

OxyContin Addiction Withdrawal

OxyContin addiction withdrawal occurs when you stop taking your long-term OxyContin prescription. Over time, your body has developed a tolerance to your OxyContin prescription and has adapted to expect that you will continue to provide it with a certain amount of the drug. Part of this adaptation means that your body won't produce certain neurotransmitters and other chemicals until triggered by a new dose of OxyContin. Therefore, when you stop taking the OxyContin, those chemicals aren't produced or released and you begin to feel ill. These ill feelings are called OxyContin detox or OxyContin addiction withdrawal symptoms and they are far from pleasant. It is not recommended that you allow yourself to experience OxyContin detox without the supervision of a medical professional if at all possible.

OxyContin Addiction Withdrawal Symptoms

Symptoms of OxyContin withdrawal will vary depending upon how long you have been taking the drug and the dose you are at when you stop taking it, but you will likely experience headaches, stomach cramps and diarrhea, sweating, achiness and twitchiness in your legs when you try and sleep. Insomnia and intense fatigue quickly follow and all your symptoms will increase in intensity as your OxyContin detox progresses.

There are psychological OxyContin addiction withdrawal symptoms as well. These include intense cravings for OxyContin or an opiate that will relieve the withdrawal symptoms and a deep depression. Anxiety is often another OxyContin withdrawal symptom and, in some cases, this is accompanied by feelings of paranoia.

OxyContin Addiction Withdrawal Treatment

Treating OxyContin addiction withdrawal is as simple as checking into a medical OxyContin or opiate detox. With medical supervision you can make sure that there are no medical complications due to other underlying physical maladies. You can also opt for medical treatment that will either address each symptom individually as you experience it or another form of treatment called maintenance that will help you break your addiction to OxyContin more slowly over time. Opiate addiction maintenance works by providing you with a similar medication that is less addictive that will bind to the opiate receptors in the brain and "trick" your body into believing that OxyContin is present, thus keeping you from experiencing OxyContin withdrawal. Over time, you will slowly decrease the amount of your maintenance medication until you are completely drug-free.

It is not recommended that you undergo OxyContin addiction withdrawal without medical treatment. Seizures, coma and death may occur without medical supervision and attention.
