Percocet Overdose Facts

Percocet is an opiate painkiller that is one of the most common prescriptions for pain in the United States. Should you have an accident or undergo surgery, it is likely that you will return home from the hospital with a prescription for Percocet to help ease your pain. Unfortunately, most who have an extended prescription for the drug will find themselves physically addicted to Percocet before long. Physical addiction alone is enough to precipitate an accidental Percocet overdose. When your addiction is mental as well, your risk of Percocet overdose is even higher.

At The Canyon, we would like to help you avoid a Percocet overdose by providing you with a Percocet rehab that treats both your mental and physical addiction to the opiate drug.

What a Percocet Overdose Looks Like

There are a number of symptoms associated with Percocet overdose that make the condition easy to recognize. The sooner you realize what's happening-especially if it's happening to you as opposed to someone you are with-the more likely you will survive the experience. Notice if you:

  • Are having difficulty breathing
  • Are experiencing abdominal cramping, nausea or vomiting
  • Feel dizzy or overwhelmingly drowsy
  • Have pinpoint pupils

Also notice if someone you are with who is taking Percocet:

  • Is not breathing
  • Has a weak pulse
  • Can't be woken up
  • Has bluish skin or nails

If you suspect that you or someone you are with is experiencing a Percocet overdose, call 911 immediately.

Why Percocet Overdose Happens

There are a number of situations in which Percocet is common. First, if you are new to Percocet and have no tolerance for the drug, then it is easy to take too much or mix the opiate painkiller with other drugs or alcohol in such a way that your system gets overloaded. Second, if you have been taking Percocet for awhile but quit for any reason and then return to the drug taking as much as you did before you stopped without accounting for the change in tolerance, you can easily take too much and OD. No matter how long or regularly you have been taking Percocet, mixing the drug with alcohol or other sedatives is a recipe for a Percocet overdose.

Stop a Percocet Overdose Before It Starts

The only way to ensure that you will not experience a Percocet overdose is to break your Percocet addiction through a Percocet rehab that provides for both a medical physical detox and mental addiction treatment. If you are no longer addicted to or taking Percocet, you can't overdose. However, trying to stop taking the drug on your own can be just as dangerous if you have underlying medical disorders you are unaware of or if you are at a high dose. It is recommended that you choose a licensed opiate rehab facility to assist you through your detox and treatment, a facility like The Canyon.
