Cancer Patients in Recovery

Cancer Patients in RecoveryCancer patients with a history of substance abuse need to be aware of the potential for drug addiction and remain vigilant as they undergo treatment.

A diagnosis of cancer is frightening enough, but for those with a history of substance abuse, the dangers are ever greater. The disease needs to be the main focus, but an underlying concern is certainly the dangers lurking in that prescription bottle.

"Generally patients with a history of substance abuse are much more vulnerable than patients who have not had substance abuse problems concerning drugs prescribed as part of their chemotherapy treatment regimen," Mesothelioma.com says. It's not just those in recovery who are at risk, though. During the course of cancer treatment, it is possible for patients to develop substance abuse problems.

This is particularly important to be aware of because addiction and drug/alcohol abuse will hinder progress, cause long-term effects, and slow the body's ability to recover from cancer treatment. It can also create serious health concerns outside of the disease and create new obstacles for survivors. To avoid these problems, carefully follow prescribed dosages of painkillers, live a healthy lifestyle and discuss any past addiction problems with their oncologists.
