George Michael Behind Bars

George Michael Behind Bars The ‘80s Wham! frontman and solo pop star is the latest troubled celeb to serve time for drug-related issues. Are his problems due to a prescription addiction?

George Michael is behind bars in his native England, serving eight weeks after pleading guilty to the charge of driving while under the influence of drugs.

Michael was arrested on July 4, 2010, after crashing his car into the front of a north London shop, causing some damage but no injuries. When police arrived on the scene, they report that they found him wide-eyed and appearing "spaced out." They also reportedly had two joints in his possession.

George Michael in Court

While in court, Michael (born Georgios Panayiotou) was sentenced for the formal charge of driving while unfit through drugs and given a sentence that included a fine of 1,250 pounds (roughly $1,925 US) and was banned from driving for five years.

Michael’s charge would normally mean a 12-week jail stay, but District Judge John Perkins said he gave Michael credit for his guilty plea and his remorse, according to CNN.com, adding Michael must serve at least half the sentence.

Michael’s Past Drug Possession

It wasn’t Michael’s first time in trouble. He’s been arrested on drug charges previously, a fact that didn’t escape the notice of the judge in this case. Michael was found guilty in 2007 of unfit driving through tiredness and prescription drugs and received a two-year driving ban. He also received a “caution” for cannabis in 2006 and for cannabis and crack cocaine in 2008. Michael was arrested again the following year near Hampstead Heath park in north London and cautioned for possession of a controlled substance.

Mukul Chawla, Michael’s defense attorney, told the court his client has used prescribed medicine for many years, but decided to stop taking them completely earlier this year. Anxiety and insomnia led him to obtain sleeping pills to manage it, according to Chawla.
