Jeff Conaway’s Coma from Possible OD

Jeff Conaway’s Coma from Possible ODJeff Conaway’s long-time struggle with addiction has put a face on the problem of chronic pain and shown just how devastating – and deadly – drugs can be.

He’s best known for his role as Kenickie in Grease and for playing Bobby Wheeler in the sitcom Taxi, but Jeff Conaway has also become the unwilling poster child for chronic pain and prescription painkiller addiction. Now he’s has had another sizeable setback in his struggle.

The 60-year-old actor was discovered unconscious on May 11, 2011, and is currently in the hospital in a coma and is unresponsive, his manager, Phil Brock, told E! News. Other news outlets are now attributing the coma to a possible drug overdose related to pain medication.

Conaway’s Past Addiction Struggles

Conaway is no stranger to hospitals. A back injury and subsequent surgeries are credited with contributing to his substance abuse in a major way. Then in 2010 he was injured again in a fall. Much of his heartbreaking battle has been televised during a 2008 season of Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew.

Cocaine, methadone and OxyContin are all drugs he’s reportedly struggled with, often blaming his chronic pain for his dependence on prescription medications. His ongoing journey through addiction is just further proof that recovery is harder than it looks and it’s much more complex than to just stop using. That’s why professional treatment under the care of trained experts is the best chance for lasting recovery.
