Lortab Addiction

Lortab addictionGet information on this popular opioid painkiller and the signs of misuse or abuse.

As prescription medications become more popular - and more widely abused - new names seem to pop up everyday while other brands that have been around for a while gain new exposure.

Lortab is one of those popular brand names.

Lortab Facts

Also known by the generic name hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen, Lortab combines hydrocodone and acetaminophen and is administered in tablet form.

A semi-synthetic narcotic analgesic and antitussive, Lortab acts similarly to codeine in many ways. Hydrocodone and other opiates work with the opiate receptors in the central nervous system to dull pain while also producing drowsiness, changes in mood and mental clouding in some. Toxic doses may cause circulatory failure and rapid, shallow breathing.

Lortab Abuse & Addiction

A mild degree of physical dependence can develop after only a few days of opioid therapy and is different from addiction. A tolerance develops when increasingly larger doses are needed to provide the same effect.

Use of Lortab crosses over into addiction when the user experiences impaired control over drug use, compulsive use, continued use despite harm and/or craving for the substance.

Abuse of Lortab and other prescription medications can also lead to the practice of "doctor shopping" to obtain additional prescriptions. Other drug-seeking behaviors include refusal to undergo examinations or testing for reported health problems, repeated "loss" of prescriptions or tampering with their medical or prescription records in an attempt to obtain more drugs.
