Prescription Drug Detox
Prescription drug detox is the first step in an efficient and safe break from a life of addiction to your prescription drugs. Whether benzodiazepines are your issue or opiate painkillers like Vicodin, OxyContin, Percocet or Lortab, prescription drug detox is practically mandatory in terms of breaking free from your addiction and starting over.
At The Canyon, we offer an efficient prescription drug rehab in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains just outside of Los Angeles, California.
Prescription Drug Detox: Can You Do It Alone?
It is not recommended that you attempt to undergo a prescription drug detox without medical supervision and alone. There are two reasons for this. One, it's an unhealthy gamble. You never know what co-occurring medical conditions may have developed during your prescription drug addiction; if you abruptly stop taking your prescription, it may complicate your other medical issues and cause serious, even deadly, problems.
Secondly, it likely won't work. Few can withstand the pain and discomfort of prescription drug withdrawal symptoms without returning to their prescribed drug to ease the symptoms. Under a doctor's care and at a drug detox facility, these withdrawal symptoms can be treated and diminished significantly thus increasing your chances of seeing the other side of Vicodin detox, free and clear of physical addiction.
Prescription Drug Detox: What to Expect
There are two different ways to go about breaking your physical addiction to opiate painkillers in a prescription drug detox. One is to use a maintenance approach. You stop taking your opiate prescription cold turkey but replace it with another opiate drug that is more controlled and impossible to abuse-methadone, Subutex, Suboxone-and slowly step down your dose during your stay in prescription drug rehab. The replacement drug will mimic the effects of the opiate of addiction and keeps your body from fully experiencing the detox.
The second option also starts when you stop taking your prescription drug cold turkey, but rather than offering a daily replacement medication, you take medications depending upon the withdrawal symptoms that you experience. These medications treat the symptoms individually and help ease your discomfort so that you can turn your attention to the psychological aspect of your prescription drug addiction treatment as well as relapse prevention.
Prescription Drug Detox: The First Step
As effective as prescription drug detox is at breaking your physical dependence upon your prescription, it is not the final step by any means. In order to be effective, a prescription drug detox should be immediately followed by a prescription drug addiction treatment. This will provide you with the treatment for the psychological addiction as well as the physical. The two treatments work together to provide a long lasting effect and give you the tools you need to remain drug free long after you return home.
