Rx Dealers Often Drug Addicts

Rx Drug Dealers Often AddictsNot every drug dealer is the dangerous-looking guy on the corner. Some are simply working to feed their own habit.

We all have that image of a drug dealer that has been planted in our minds from movies and crime programs on TV. The dangerous character who is in it for the money, trying to lure kids into a life of addiction.

Fortunately or unfortunately, that’s not always the case, especially when it comes to prescription addiction. The detectives in the Louisville Police Department Prescription Drug Diversion Squad say they will make between 500 and 600 arrests this year, but they say while it’s a lucrative business, most of the individuals they arrest are procuring the pills to support their own habit.

Prescription Addiction is Growing

Prescription addiction has received plenty of press in recent years, but despite all the attention the problem has received, prescription addiction continues to be a growing problem in the U.S.

Kentucky has the dubious distinction of being one of the worst in the nation when it comes to prescription pill abuse, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, proving just how difficult the problem can be. Responsible doctors don’t want to enable addictions, but they also don’t want to refuse to help someone who is legitimately in pain. Some doctors find the dilemmas associated with prescription addiction so troubling that they no longer prescribe them.
