Tragedy Gets Operatic Treatment

Tragedy Gets Operatic TreatmentAnna Nicole Smith’s life story, which included a tragic end due to drug abuse, becomes a hit opera.

She was an actress, model, stripper, Playboy Playmate, reality TV star and tragic figure. In the end, Anna Nicole Smith fell victim to a powerful addiction to prescription medications. Now her always-dramatic life is being celebrated in the form of an opera. Titled Anna Nicole, the show is slated to premiered at London’s Royal Opera House in Feb. 2011, with six initial showings selling out before the curtain ever rose.

The show was created by Mark-Anthony Turnage and Richard Thomas, who saw the buxom blonde as “fame incarnate,” and cite her story as a universal one. Not surprisingly, Thomas’s previous credits include Jerry Springer, and he penned the lyrics for this latest effort. In the end, the pair hope the love they have for Smith comes through in the final product.

The opera has been in development for years, with the Royal Opera House looking for something contemporary and modern. "Bad girls have always been the stuff of opera," a venue official insists. "Think of Carmen and Traviata. Why shouldn't Anna Nicole join opera's women?"
