What Parents Should Know About Alcohol Use
Alcohol is one of the most common substances abused by teenagers due to the ease with which they can acquire it. It may seem innocuous enough, something all teenagers try at one point or another, but frequent use or abuse of alcohol at an early age can build a foundation for a lifetime of alcoholism and addiction.
If you think that your teen is using or abusing alcohol on a regular basis, we can help at The Canyon. Our personalized treatment program can be customized to speak to the needs of your child and help him or her overcome alcohol before it becomes a way of life.
Alcohol: The Basics
Though alcohol is legal, technically it is an illegal substance for your teenager. No one under the age of 21 is allowed to purchase, possess or drink alcohol by order of law, even if that person is with a parent or an adult of legal drinking age. A depressant, alcohol is made when grapes, grains and berries are fermented and distilled into liquid, bottled and sold. The fermentation process and the ingredients determine what proof or percentage of alcohol is in the beverage and what type of alcoholic beverage it becomes.
Alcohol affects every part of the body as it travels quickly through the bloodstream, with the most immediate effect taking place in the central nervous system and the brain. Drinkers will either relax and feel less inhibited or become more aggressive, but either way, it takes less than five minutes to feel the effects of a drink and those effects can last for hours.
Physical and Psychological Issues Due to Alcohol Abuse
Your teenager is growing physically, mentally and psychologically at a rapid rate during their years of young adulthood. If your teen is drinking in any amount, they are risking serious consequences to their development. Specifically, brain function and development in the following areas can be impaired:
- Motor skills and coordination
- Impulse control
- Memory and recall ability
- Decision-making skills and judgment
The Need for Alcohol Addiction Treatment
Because alcohol is so easily accessible for kids, some start as early as middle school. In fact, surveys show that half of all 8th graders have tried alcohol. Other research shows that alcohol is more commonly abused by kids than any other drug including tobacco and that more of them die due to alcohol abuse than all other drugs combined. However, though nothing is worse than losing a child to alcohol abuse, there are other dangers:
- Teenagers who drink are four times more likely to develop alcoholism in the future.
- 67 percent of teens who drink before 15 will use other drugs.
- Early sexual activity is more likely-especially while drunk or high-among those who drink during their teen years.
- Teens who drink are 12 times more likely to be injured while under the influence and 10 times more likely to be in a fight.
- Grades suffer when a teen is drinking, which increases the chances of dropping out and decreases the chances that they'll ever go to college.
- Car accidents are the number one cause of death for teenagers, and more than one-third of these deaths are caused by alcohol.
