Drug Abuse and Depression in Teens

Depression is more than just feeling blue, it is a debilitating disorder that impacts every facet of a person's life, making it difficult to get out of bed in the morning. Unshakable melancholy, feeling that everything is worthless, and an inability to experience joy are the hallmarks of depressive disorders.

When a mental illness, such as depression, is diagnosed in conjunction with another mental illness, such as addiction, the individual is said to suffer from co-occurring disorders. Half of all adolescents seeking treatment for addiction have co-occurring mental illnesses. And half of all adolescents seeking treatment for mental health issues have co-occurring drug addictions.

The Canyon's approach to rehabilitation includes simultaneous treatment of addiction and underlying co-occurring disorders. Detox is the first step in making an accurate diagnosis - once a client is free from the harmful effects of drugs or alcohol, symptoms of co-occurring mental illnesses are no longer masked and, therefore, easier to identify and treat.

Understanding The Nature of Drug Abuse and Depression in Teens

Recent studies on co-occurring disorders in young people have discovered that almost every single individual reports that their mental or emotional disorders were present before they started using drugs. Experts point to the low number of adolescents (less than 1/5) who are actually receiving treatment for mental illness as the cause for such high rates of co-occurring disorders.

When treatment options are not available, self-medicating with drugs or alcohol helps relax the user and ease unbearable symptoms. While this may appear to fix the problem, continued drug use quickly escalates into full-blown drug addiction, which in turn aggravates the original symptoms.

The Risks of Waiting Too Long for Drug Abuse and Depression Treatment in Teenagers

Research indicates youngsters suffering from emotional disorders are four times as likely to abuse drugs or alcohol compared to teenagers without such disorders.

Furthermore, mental illnesses combined with substance abuse or addiction fuels the probability of:

  • Hospitalization
  • Erratic lodgings
  • Homelessness
  • Incarceration
  • Suicide

Accurate diagnosis and proper treatment of co-occurring disorders promotes substantial reduction of relapse and risk for further self-harm.

The Need for Early Treatment of Teens Suffering From Drug Abuse and Depression

Because individuals with mental illness face strong social stigma, using drugs or alcohol to gain peer approval is often viewed as a chance to alleviate loneliness and isolation. Studies show that appropriate medication prescribed to children with ADHD reduces their risk of drug abuse by 85 percent. Left untreated, disruptive behaviors and illegal activities often force youngsters into drug rehab by court order. But just treating the addiction is a recipe for disaster. Co-occurring disorders need to be addressed at the same time in order to achieve lasting sobriety, but you won't find that option in most drug treatment centers.
