Drug Addiction Interventions for Teens

It can be difficult to get a teenager into treatment, but the alternative - doing nothing about their drug addiction problem - is unacceptable. This is not a problem that will go away on its own; it's imperative that someone take action. Sometimes, parents or other family members set up a drug rehab intervention for the teen in their lives, and other times, friends and classmates may take the initiative. Sometimes, professional interventionists can be brought in to help the situation, but regardless who steps up and plans and facilitates the event, anything is better than ignoring the problem.

At The Canyon, we can help you plan and execute an intervention for your teenager in order to get them the help that they need. Although it can be difficult to confront someone you love about their drug and alcohol abuse or addiction, doing so is critical to helping them get the help they need and, in the case of a young person, getting help early on can save their lives.

Drug Addiction Interventions for Teens: The Right Timing

Many people choose to enter treatment after they have 'bottomed out' or reached the end of their rope. These terms are a general way to refer to the disasters that can result when addiction is at play. The good news is that these harsh experiences can be the awakening that is needed for someone to get help and get better. The bad news is that sometimes these experiences can destroy lives. In the case of teenagers, an early intervention can save them from experiencing the devastating results of 'bottoming out,' providing them with addiction treatment that will keep their disease from ruining their lives before it's even begun.

Most teens go through four stages of addiction, and intervening before they reach the fourth step is crucial. These steps are:

  1. Experimental use of a drug or alcohol
  2. Social use of a drug or alcohol
  3. Changing lifestyle or behaviors so that they are centered around taking drugs or alcohol
  4. Entire life's focus is on obtaining and consuming drugs or alcohol

Drug Addiction Intervention for Teens: Taking the Initiative

Addiction in teenagers is a tricky thing to deal with. For starters, many teens give no outward signs that they are using drugs or alcohol until they have become firmly addicted to those substances, so parental awareness of what's going on in a teen's life is crucial. Second, once a teen has become addicted, they will more than likely refuse to seek out help or treatment until at least their 30s, according to historical statistics and research. Finally, because there is such a small window of opportunity for a successful intervention in the life of a teen addicted to drugs or alcohol, it is important to act quickly. Otherwise, the teen's addiction may become more gripping, and once that happens, it's very difficult to convince them to seek help.

One study that was done recently concluded that, when alcoholism develops during the teenage years, it is very difficult to treat it, as opposed to people who become addicted later on in life. Because of this, it's critical that you pay attention and act quickly if you suspect a loved one of abusing drugs or alcohol.
