What Parents Should Know About Marijuana Use

More than 500 slang terms are used to describe marijuana, associated paraphernalia, and the individuals involved with its use. Almost 50 years ago, hardly anyone was familiar with "Mary Jane," but today it is the most widely used illegal drug in the U.S. with 14 million regular users age 12 and over.

Cannabis is the Latin name for the family of plants that contain delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive compound that in small doses creates a sense of euphoria, but in extremely potent amounts can cause psychotic breaks from reality, similar to individuals with schizophrenia.

Since the 1970s, potency of "weed" has continued to increase. Testing of confiscated plants by law enforcement agencies reveals an average of 7 percent THC for "bud" on the black market.

The Canyon treats marijuana use as seriously as any other type of drug dependency. Our specialized staff of addiction counselors, psychologists, nutritionists, and interventionists are ready to assist your teen in learning the dangers of marijuana use as well as the skills necessary for staying clean.

Parents Should Know: The Effects of Marijuana

"Reefer" acts on areas of the brain that control senses and perception, so ordinary things you see, hear, feel, taste, or touch become noticeably exaggerated and highly entertaining, sometimes even humorous. Time appears to pass very slowly, and extreme feelings of thirst or hunger (known as "the munchies") can come on suddenly.

There are some individuals that may not experience much of anything when using "dope," and still others that encounter feelings of panic, disorientation, anxiety, paranoia, or nausea.

Effects can also vary depending on the type and potency of "grass" being used, whether it's smoked or mixed with food, and whether other drugs or alcohol are being used at the same time.

Parents Should Know: The Prevalence of Marijuana Use

Almost 98 million people - 34 percent of the nation's population - have "burned one" in their lifetime. The 2006 Monitoring the Future Survey reveals:

  • 15 percent of 8th graders have tried it
  • 14 percent of 10th graders are currently using it, and
  • 18 percent of 12th graders are habitual "stoners"

Additional studies discovered that "herb" use peaks around age 18-21 then begins a gradual decline as an individual ages and, presumably, takes on more personal responsibilities.

Parents Should Know: Marijuana is Addictive

Continued use of "pot" almost always results in chemical dependency and is quite often accompanied by emotional and psychological addiction as well. Over 150,000 individuals every year report "chronic" as their preferred drug of choice, and the number one reason for enrolling in drug rehab.

Persistent, long-term users do experience marijuana withdrawal symptoms whenever the drug is not present in its usual amount. Be on the lookout for:

  • Extreme irritability/agitation
  • Increased paranoia
  • Decreased appetite
  • Restlessness/trouble sleeping
  • Headaches, nausea, mild shakes or chills

Young people with antisocial tendencies can become dependent fairly quickly, as well as individuals with other psychological or behavioral disorders such as eating or identity disorders, attention-deficit or hyperactivity disorders, self-injuring behavior, depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Parents Should Know: Marijuana Addiction Treatment is Available at The Canyon

The Canyon has a strong, clinically based treatment program addressing all aspects of an individual's chemical dependency, psychiatric and emotional needs. We specialize in treating multiple, co-occurring disorders which minimizes the chance for relapse. At The Canyon, we treat the whole person, not just the drug addiction.

The Canyon recognizes the negative impact of marijuana can have on learning, behavior, and emotional maturity. Compulsive drug use impairs all of these areas of development, so the sooner your child is free of this toxic substance, the better. The Canyon is ready to assist with detox, rehab, education, and counseling to help young people get back on the right track.
