Does Your Teen Need to be Drug Tested?

Understanding the differences between normal adolescent behavior and a temperament influenced by drug abuse can be tricky. A physician can rule out any medical problems, and family counseling helps to identify rapidly changing boundaries within the parent/teen relationship. If, after these methods have been exhausted, you still notice any of the troubling behaviors discussed below, it may be time for a drug rehab intervention.

The Canyon staff recognizes the weight that such a decision can carry. Parents naturally want the best for their children, at any age. When a problem such as the magnitude of drug addiction looms over a family, it is often viewed as easier to let the situation work itself out. This approach, however, leads to disastrous, sometimes deadly consequences. The Canyon is equipped with qualified specialists who are dedicated to providing the assistance and the tools necessary to take back control and rise above the frightening grip of drug addiction.

Emotional Changes That May Indicate the Need for a Drug Test

There are a number of indicators that your child may be using or abusing alcohol or other illicit substances, and emotional changes are one of them. For example:

  • Constant crying jags
  • Intense feelings of hopelessness or apprehension
  • Sudden phobias or fears
  • Recurring overreactions/ explosions of rage
  • Psychotic behavior (confused words, irrational paranoia, controlling thoughts)

Behavioral Changes That May Indicate the Need for a Drug Test

Sudden or extreme changes in behavior can also indicate that your child is in trouble and that a drug test may be needed to help you ascertain what is going on. Some of these behaviors include:

  • Isolation from friends and/or family
  • Disinterest in favorite activities
  • Complete change in peer group
  • Secretive about new friends and interests
  • Lashing out in violence/ threatening suicide

Physical Changes That May Indicate the Need for a Drug Test

Still other changes may tip you off that something is not quite right with your child and that he or she may be suffering from drug addiction. Look for:

  • Neglecting personal hygiene or appearance
  • Constant complaints of feeling too sick or tired to go to school
  • Lack of motivation
  • Forgetfulness
  • Stealing/ excessive borrowing of money or valuables

Before You Drug Test Your Teen

It's important to create an atmosphere of respect that is non-judgmental and non-critical where your teen can speak freely about problems, pressures, and choices. Many schools, and sometimes social services departments, offer free or reduced-cost counseling services for adolescents. While there may be defiance or hostility at the suggestion of seeing a therapist, don't let resistance cloud your instincts if something just doesn't seem right with your child.
