While the Healing Life Program is specially designed to meet the multifaceted recovery needs of those with co-occurring issues, participation is available to those not assessed in any particular diagnosis.
The core of the Healing Life Program is to help you develop a positive relationship with yourself. Through a variety of traditional and non-traditional therapies and experiences, you will have the opportunity to reclaim your personal dreams and goals awakening your authentic relationship with life. The Canyon is a licensed residential chemical dependency treatment facility that specializes in treating adult individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health issues. The Canyon's approach to healing for individuals is an equally balanced approach that addresses chemical dependency and mental health issues, provides individual and group therapy, promotes immersion in 12 step recovery work and self help support groups, and provides introduction to a variety of mindfulness and spiritual philosophies and practices to enhance personal spiritual connection and personal growth.
The Canyon has a strong, clinically based treatment program addressing all aspects of an individual's chemical dependency, psychiatric and emotional needs. Upon admission, each client is assessed by an internist, addictionologist and a psychiatrist, and then monitored throughout their stay in treatment at The Canyon.
Each client's treatment plan is developed by a master's level therapist and reviewed weekly by the full clinical team. Therapists meet with their clients for individual sessions each week. Sessions focus on each client's specific needs and the therapeutic modalities implemented will vary accordingly. The Canyon staff will remain attentive to each individual's needs and may increase the amount of individual therapy as clinically indicated. In addition, The Canyon also provides individual EMDR sessions from a licensed clinical psychologist.
Each Structured Weekly Program Includes:
The Canyon offers a unique and fulfilling culinary experience that supports the mind, body and spirit in the recovery process. Our chefs work with the most wholesome and highest quality ingredients. They use seasonal organic produce; pesticide and antibiotic free dairy products, poultry and fish and Neiman Ranch organic beef. Our goal is to introduce our clients to the healing properties of organic fresh foods which allow the body to reach a balance which reduces cravings, creates strength, calms the emotions and brings clarity of mind. The time and care spent creating "slow food" allows us to be able to offer a vast variety of creative meals. Focus is placed on each client's dietary needs combined with expert nutritional knowledge to design a personal food plan. Awareness during food preparation and exceptional attention to detail provide each client with a new perspective on food and healing without compromising great taste and delicious flavors. What we are creating is a lasting result that can be experienced by our clients well beyond their commitment with us. We are grateful for the opportunity to share and provide high standards in nourishment and well being.
Each individual will participate in a minimum of 100 hours of group therapy each month and at least two hours of individual therapy weekly. Individual sessions focus on each individual's specific needs and the therapeutic modalities implemented will vary accordingly. In addition, The Canyon staff will remain attentive to each individual's needs and may increase the amount of individual therapy as clinically indicated.
The Canyon has a number of groups that are regularly scheduled each week, including: meditation, primary single gender therapy, yoga, art, equine, Toltec or awareness, boundaries, 12-Step facilitation, ropes and challenge tower, and combined gender therapy. We also offer a variety of other therapeutic groups that are made available as needed or at a minimum one time each month. These groups include storytelling, medicine wheel, labyrinth, sweat lodge, energy work, plants for healing, Tai Chi, heart mind coherence, therapeutic breathing, music, movement, and poetry. Experiential work is the essence of our approach to the therapeutic process, which The Canyon incorporates into all our groups as well as individual therapy sessions.
The Canyon staff recognizes the importance and need of family involvement (whenever possible) in an individual's recovery process. We provide education about the impact of addictive behavior on the family as well as the challenges that arise for the family when a client begins the recovery process. We work toward making family therapy a significant part of each individual's treatment experience. The Canyon staff believes that in order to provide the best treatment possible for each client we need to make decisions about family therapy on a case by case basis following discussion with our treatment team and each individual. In order to more effectively assess whether family therapy is clinically indicated, The Canyon staff (with an individual's permission) may consult with an individual's referring therapist and family members. The Canyon provides many opportunities for clients to work on family issues in group and individual therapy as well as offering Family of Origin programs on a regular basis. The Family of Origin program is likely to be more intense and take place over a weekend in order to accommodate family members and allow time for the healing of family relationships to begin.
Challenge activities such as the ropes course, challenge course, beach trips and storytelling are designed to address basic recovery issues as well as move you into deeper insight and healing. These group sessions utilize traditional group therapy, structured experiential group work, metaphor therapy, and adventure-based counseling. Learning and internalizing the concepts of limits, boundaries, self-care, acceptance, letting go and accountability are important themes in this form of therapy.
The Canyon provides comprehensive recovery treatment for survivors of childhood and/or adult trauma of all types. Co-occurring addictive and compulsive disorders can be treated concurrently. Disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder, disassociative disorder, obsessive/compulsive disorder, and panic disorder are addressed by our multi-disciplinary team. The particular approach for treatment is determined on an individual basis to meet each person's needs.
Equine-assisted therapy combines the use of horses and experiential therapy. Horses, with their intuitive and sensitive nature, mirror what they receive from people, providing powerful insights and learning experiences in this therapeutic setting. Through your relationship with the horse and the use of metaphors, equine therapists will facilitate the process of awareness and change for each individual.
