Vicodin Addiction

In 1999, a study estimated that nearly 4 million Americans were using prescription drugs in a fashion that was not consistent with their doctor's orders. In other words, nearly 4 million people were using prescription drugs in an illegal or ill advised fashion. Of these 4 million people, over half of them were abusing prescription painkillers. The most common prescription painkiller on the market and the one that is abused the most, is Vicodin.

At The Canyon, we provide patients with the tools they need to recover from opiate addiction. Nestled in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains outside of Beverly Hills, The Canyon provides a unique rehab experience that is also a retreat from the pressures of everyday life.

Vicodin Addiction: The Basics

When you start taking Vicodin, it is usually as prescribed, to get through the pain caused by a surgery, accident or traumatic event. However, Vicodin addiction is exceedingly common and can start if you alter your prescription in any way or begin to supplement as a physical tolerance develops. Once this physical tolerance develops, it is exceedingly difficult to stop taking Vicodin as the withdrawal symptoms that usually ensue can be overwhelming to say the least. Additionally, there is the fear that the original pain for which the drug was prescribed will return.

Vicodin Addiction and Prescription Fraud

Those who are addicted to Vicodin may obtain the drug by buying it off of the street or, as is more common, by committing prescription fraud. In cases such as this, the individual may steal prescription pads and write their own prescriptions for the medications, or they may call pharmacies, pretending to be a doctor and order a prescription over the phone, which they then go and pick up. They may also visit multiple doctors, fake or exaggerate their pain, and receive multiple prescriptions. There are a number of ways to procure more of a prescription drug to maintain an opiate addiction, and few if any of them are legal.

Effects of Vicodin Abuse and Addiction

Vicodin addiction is an insidious disease, one that start slowly and inconspicuously, only to grow in power and nature over time. As the addiction grows, the damage to the body and its organs grows along with it. You may first experience constipation, varying heart rates, vomiting, and dizziness. As your addiction grows, these effects will become more severe and increase to include severe sedation, fainting spells, hallucinations and blurred vision.
