Vicodin Overdose Facts

When you take more Vicodin than your body can process safely, you experience a Vicodin overdose. Thankfully, when you take your Vicodin prescription exactly as prescribed, it is unlikely that you will experience a Vicodin overdose, however, the moment you alter the prescription on your own-take more than prescribed, for example, or decrease the amount of time between doses-then you are at risk for a Vicodin overdose.

If you are addicted to Vicodin, then a Vicodin overdose is always a possibility, a possibility that could be deadly. The Canyon can help you avoid that risk by providing you with a comprehensive Vicodin rehab that starts with helping you break your body's addiction to the drug with a Vicodin detox.

Vicodin Overdose: The Basics

From the moment you start taking Vicodin, your body begins to build up a tolerance to the drug. The longer you take it, the more of it you need to experience the pain relief and high that came with those first few doses. In an effort to secure those pleasurable feelings, some may opt to take too many pills or to supplement their prescription with alcohol or other drugs. The result is an overdose that can cause seizures, cardiac arrest, coma and/or death.

Vicodin Overdose Signs and Symptoms

If you experience a Vicodin overdose, you may not recognize the signs and symptoms of what is happening to you before the medication overwhelms your mind and body. You may feel extremely tired or confused. You may have trouble breathing or moving very quickly. You may experience nausea or vomiting or just feel a general overall feeling of discomfort.

If you are with someone who is experiencing a Vicodin overdose, you may notice that their skin is bluish in color or cold and clammy. They may appear to be asleep but be unresponsive when you try to rouse them. Their muscles and limbs may be limp when you shake them. Their breathing will be shallow and low, almost inaudible and their heartbeat may be faint as well.

If you think that you or someone you are with is overdosing on Vicodin, call 911 immediately and tell the operator what was taken, how much and when.

Vicodin Overdose Prevention

If you are not mentally addicted to Vicodin and craving the euphoric high that you generally experience when you first start taking the drug, then the chances that you will take more of the drug than you should or that you'll create a lethal combination with other drugs or alcohol is slim. However, those who are constantly craving or chasing the euphoric high that the first few uses usually provide are at high risk for Vicodin overdose. They are far more likely to overdose accidentally.

The only sure way to prevent Vicodin overdose is to stop taking Vicodin. Those who are physically addicted or mentally addicted will find that that is easier said than done. That is why a medically supervised Vicodin detox is the safest and most efficient way to break your addiction to Vicodin and stop taking the drug completely.
